Saves for a Cure

Senior Todd Sheridan (Edison, NJ) and The College at Brockport Ice Hockey team will be taking part in its annual Saves for a Cure game on Friday, February 19th when the Golden Eagles host SUNY Oswego at 7pm in the Tuttle North Ice Arena.

Saves for a Cure is a charity organization that Sheridan, a cancer survivor, started three years ago to raise money to help children in the Rochester area better cope with the challenges of undergoing cancer treatments. Throughout the season, any save made by a Brockport goalie raises money pledged by local businesses.

The hockey team will join forces with the Athletic Department and the College Bookstore to help boost the fund raising activity for the charity.

The Athletic Department will be donating all of the ticket-sale revenue from the Saves for a Cure game to the charity and The College at Brockport Bookstore will be donating 20% of the sales from any emblematic merchandise purchased between February 15-20, 2010. In addition, there will be a 50/50 raffle during the game and general donation buckets. All proceeds will be enhancing hospital stays for children undergoing cancer treatments at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center in Rochester.

This year, the Golden Eagles will be wearing black jerseys with a white Saves for a Cure logo on the front during the Oswego game. The jerseys are available for auction beginning February 15 and continuing through February 20, at noon. Winners will be announced February 20 and also be contacted via email to confirm delivery of the jersey.

Athletes of the Week

Here are the Elite Eagle athletes of the week for the week of Feb. 8-14.

Senior Nathan Butler is this week’s male athlete of the week after setting three school records at the SUNYAC Swimming and Diving Championships.
Butler broke the oldest school record remaining at Brockport (set in 1977) with an opening 100-yard backstroke leg of 54.16 second in the 400-yard medley relay. He improved the record the next day in the backstroke event with a time of 53.94 seconds, earning ninth place.
Butler was part of the 800-yard freestyle relay that captured third-place overall with a school-record time of 7:09.80. The time was more than 21 seconds better than the qualifying time for the relay and shaved more than six seconds off the school record set in 1988.
His final record came when he shaved nearly two full seconds off his preliminary time of 2:00.69 to break the school record in the 200-yard backstroke. He finished 11th overall in 1:58.98.

Senior Jen Conklin is this week’s female athlete of the week after setting two school records at the SUNYAC Swimming and Diving Championships.
Conklin broke her own school record in the 200 yard Individual Medley placing 12th in 2:19.03. The old record was set in her freshman season. The second record came in the 400-yard Medley Relay as Conklin swam the second leg in the relay that placed seventh in 4:17.13. The relay finished in 4:17.09 in the preliminary round of competition setting the new school record. The previous record was set in 1997.

Sea of Green

Tonight is SEA of GREEN as the ice hockey team will be hosting SUNY Geneseo at 7pm. The first 250 Brockport students with ID will receive a 'Sea of Green' T-shirt courtesy of College Suites.

Brockport is 12-9-1 on the season and has gone 6-1-1 in its last eight games... Nine players have tallied more than 10 points on the season .... James Cody leads the team with 24 points on 11 goals and 13 assists... Cody leads the conference with eight power play goals... Ray Tremblay ranks eighth in the SUNYAC with 17 assists and he stands fourth in power play points with 14 (3g, 11a)... Gregg Amato stands second in the conference for defensmen scoring with 18 points on three goals and 15 assists... Todd Sheridan is allowing 3.24 goals against average with a .908 save percentage... Brockport has an 85.7% penalty kill on the season.

A win tonight brings Brockport one step closer to hosting a playoff home game. Bring your Brockport pride to the rink and dont forget to wear Green and you cheer on your Golden Eagles.

Athletes of the Week

Once again Brockport had some impressive performances throughout last week but two student-athletes really raised the bar to earn athlete of the week honors.

Freshman Elizabeth Levy (Glen Allen, VA/Hermitage) is this week’s female athlete of the week after recording a second high 38.300 on the all-around at the University of Pittsburgh quad meet against Iowa State, Rutgers and Pitt.
Levy had the highest Brockport score on the vault with a 9.60 and scored a team-best on the uneven bars with a 9.475 and was the best Golden Eagle on the floor exercise with a 9.675. She scored a 9.55 on the balance beam as Brockport set a new school record with a team score of 48.00, breaking the old mark of 47.375 set in 2004.
As a team Brockport scored a 188.350, which is the second-highest regular-season team score in school history and the fourth-best team score in school history. The 188.350 is also the highest Division III score in the country this season.

Senior Dan Brigano (Utica, NY/Utica-Proctor) is this week’s male athlete of the week after establishing a new school record for The College at Brockport Swimming and Diving teams with a score of 470.20 on the three-meter board in an 11-dive meet at the SUNY Oswego Diving Invitational.
Brigano finished second in the three-meter competition and was third in the one-meter event for the Golden Eagles. Brigano broke his own record of 426.5 in the three-meter competition as he scored over 43 points higher than the previous mark. In the one-meter event, Brigano took third with a 432.15.
Both of his scores are provisional qualifying marks for the NCAA Championships.

Honorable Mention for the week included:
Kileigh Chapman scored a school-record 9.75 to help Brockport set a new record on the beam at Pittsburgh.
James Cody scored two goals on the week including the game winner over Buffalo State.
James Forsyth defended his title at 165 pounds to help lead the Golden Eagles to the team title for the 14th straight season at the John Summa Invitational Tournament.

Get in the PINK ZONE

The College at Brockport Women’s Basketball team will host PINK ZONE on Tuesday, February 2nd. The team will wear pink warm-up tops and other pink apparel for its game against SUNY Fredonia at 6 pm at the Tuttle North Gymnasium in Brockport.

All fans are encouraged to wear pink as well and all donations collected will go to the Kay Yow Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Cancer Fund.

There will be raffle items sponsored by the Brockport Student Government, Brockport Health Promotions and the Barnes & Noble Bookstore on campus. Students and fans can purchase raffle tickets at the game and can also purchase pink t-shirts and pink carnations to show their support for the breast cancer awareness campaign.

The WBCA works with college teams from across the country to organize Pink Zone events on their campuses to raise money in honor and memory of the former North Carolina State head women’s basketball coach Kay Yow, who passed away in January of 2009 after a long battle with cancer.

Athletes of the Week

There were a lot of outstanding athletic performances turned in by the Golden Eagles last week which makes choosing the athletes of the week a bit tough...but the votes are in and the honors go to Whitney Smith and Ray Lund.

Senior basketball guard Whitney Smith (Webster, NY/Webster-Thomas) eclipsed the 1,000 career point mark as she averaged 20.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in three games. She shot 47.8 percent from the floor, 54.5 from the arc and 84.6 from the free throw line. Smith netted a game-high 20 points against Buffalo State and finished with 19 points and a team-high seven rebounds verse Cortland. She scored a game-high 22 points, grabbed six rebounds, handed out three assists and had four steals against Oswego. On the season she leads the team in scoring, averaging 17.2 points per game.

Junior Ray Lund (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) dominated the throwing events, winning the weight throw and the shot put to help The College at Brockport Men’s Indoor Track and Field team to a second-place finish at the Class of '32 Alumni Meet at Colgate University in Hamilton, NY. Lund earned the Katie Almeter Most Valuable Player award for the men as he was first in the weight throw with a 16.92-meter heave and took top honors in the shot put with a personal best and winning toss of 14.52 meters.

Honorable mention performances on the week included:
Senior gymnast Lauren Gildemeyer who tied the school record on vault with a winning score of 9.8.
Junior Maria Quagliana continued to dominate the women’s diving events, winning both the one- and three-meter events against Oneonta and Buffalo State.
Senior goalie Todd Sheridan made 17 saves in the third period and a total of 36 as Brockport scored three times in the final 20 minutes of the game to lead the Golden Eagles to a 5-2 victory over SUNY Morrisville. Brockport has won five of its last six games and moved into sole possession of fourth place in the SUNYAC standings with the road win.
Pete Manktelow was second in the mile run at Colgate with a school-record time of 4:16.73. The time is just .7 seconds from the NCAA qualifying standard.
