Weekend in a Glimpse

Hey Golden Eagles fans,

Just giving you the update on the weekend.

Our football tried to start the season 3-0 for the first time since 2003, but Brockport lost in the final seconds to Montclair State on Homecoming on Saturday. Jake Graci continued to make Brockport history as he broke four more offensive records - total yards in a game, yards passing in a game, passing attempts in a game and was on the throwing end of the longest pass in school history.

On the defensive side, Nathan Bull led the Golden Eagles with 17 tackles, 10 of them being solo's and an interception. Bull's performance earned him NJAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this year.

Thanks to all the fans who came out and supported the Golden Eagles. It was a huge crowd at Bob Boozer Field and I thought there were some great halftime festivities from the BSG Spring Break Competition to our Hall of Fame inductees walking out on the field. We even celebrated the Teams of the Decades - Some of Brockport's greatest athletes and teams made their way on the track. How Cool!

*One of the cool things that happened this week was in men's soccer. It's not very often that a goalie gets a shot on goal, and it's even more rare to see a goalie score. But never say never, as on Friday Brockport Goalkeeper Joe Marino netted his first (and probably last) goal of his career. Marino punted the ball across half field, took a big bounce and went over the Plattsburgh's goalie's head and into the back of the net!!

The rest of the game not so pretty for Brockport. Plattsburgh handed the Golden Eagles a 4-1 loss. Brockport came back on Saturday and shutout Potsdam 1-0. Brad Lefort scored Brockport's goal in the win.

For Women's Soccer - Jess VanAllen scored in both games over the weekend as Brockport tied Plattsburgh 1-1 on Friday and beat Potsdam 4-1 on Saturday.

Now to our Golden Eagle Athletes of the Week:

Male Athlete:

Senior wide receiver Matt Newman (Unadilla, NY/Unatego) is the male athlete of the week.

Newman finished with 124 yards on eight catches as The College at Brockport lost a heartbreaking 41-39 decision to Montclair State in the final minute of the game.

Newman contributed to the school record breaking 442 yards through the air, passing the old mark of 399 yards. The school record for passing attempts in a game was also broken with 58, the most in a game since 1989 with 49 attempts against Western Connecticut.

Female Athlete:

Senior Alyssa Fitchette (Watertown, NY/Watertown) led the women’s volleyball team to a 4-1 week, including a 4-0 performance in the first round of the SUNYAC Pool Play to earn female athlete of the week honors.

The middle blocker amassed 92 kills and hit .370 with 16 blocks in the five matches. Against conference opponents she averaged 4.87 kills per game, 26 digs and 14 blocks. Brockport was the only team in the SUNYAC to go 4-0 on the weekend.

Fitchette started with the week with 19 kills in the 3-1 loss to Nazareth. In pool play action she increased her kill total each match with 18 against Geneseo, 23 against Buffalo State and a career-high 26 in the 3-1 win over Fredonia. Brockport previously lost to Fredonia 3-0 a week prior.

That's all for now. A slow week more most teams at Brockport, but come out and support Field Hockey, they have three home games this upcoming week starting tomorrow (Tuesday) against Nazareth at 4 pm.

I'll be back with more updates throughout the week!

Football is 2-0!

Hey fans,

Just sending a quick update on Your Golden Eagles.

It looks like the football team likes drama (my talons are a little sore today too) as Brockport beat Frostburg State on Saturday 37-32. Brockport was losing and needed to put together a game winning drive late in the 4th quarter. Golden Eagle QB Jake Graci did exactly that as he found Hector Rosas in the end zone with 33 seconds left to give Brockport the lead and eventually the win.

Graci was on his "A" game as he threw for 344 yards and set a new school record with five touchdown passes. Way to go Jake!! The performance earned the senior quarterback the honor of NJAC (New Jersery Athletic Conference) Offensive Player of the Week.

So far Brockport is 2-0 on 2009 and look to go 3-0 for the first time since 2003. Next week is Homecoming at Brockport as the Golden Eagles take on Montclair State. Kickoff is at 1pm so see you all out at Special Olympics Stadium!

- Hey congrats goes out to the women's soccer team! They beat SUNY Geneseo 3-1 on Saturday. The only Knight goal was off a penalty kick. Brockport goalie Erin Asquith was a brick wall as she made a season-high 10 saves, earning SUNYAC player of the week.

-As for the men's team, they tied SUNY Farmingdale 0-0 in double overtime. It was the fourth shutout by the Golden Eagles so far this year!

To the Elite Eagles this week:

Kaitlyn Broderick is this week’s female athlete of the week.

The sophomore went 2-1 at number one doubles and 2-1 at No. 3 singles in three matches last week. In the win over Keuka, Broderick won 6-0, 6-0 in singles and was paired with Carolyn McMenemen for a close 9-7 victory at No. 1 doubles.

In the match against Fredonia, Broderick teamed with McMenemen for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles and then posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles.

In the loss to RIT, Broderick played a tough singles match as she dropped the first set 6-3 before forcing a tie-break in the second set 7-6 (7-2), but it wasn’t enough.

Senior quarterback Jake Graci is this week’s male athlete of the week after leading the College at Brockport Golden Eagles to a 37-32 come from behind victory over Frostburg State University.

The victory is the second consecutive game that the Golden Eagles (2-0) have come from behind in the fourth quarter and gone ahead for the victory with less than a minute to play in the contest.

With 33 seconds left in the game, Graci threw his fifth touchdown pass, setting a new school record for touchdown passes in a game. The previous record was four scoring passes set twice in 1990 and once last year.

Graci finished with a career-high 344 yards on 26-for-37 passing and completed passes to six different receivers.

*Well that's it for now, busy week for the Golden Eagles coming up. And you better believe, that I'm going to try and get as much as sleep as possible because I may lose 20 pounds cheering on our Golden Eagles on Saturday for Homecoming!!! LOL Don't forget to check back for the updates during the week.

Another Busy Weekend for the Golden Eagles

Hey everyone,

Hopefully you had a chance to come out and see your Golden Eagles in action this weekend. The highlight was both the Men's and Women's Cross Country teams as they hosted the Brockport Invitational.

The men finished in second place while the women finished in First!!! Junior Brittany Streeter led the way for Brockport as she finished second overall while junior Caitlin McAneney finished third. For the men, junior Matt Avery finished second.

I had a lot of fun on Saturday cheering on the women's soccer team as they took on Nazereth. The Golden Eagles and the GoldenFlyers teamed up for "Golden Challange for a Pink Cure." The event's proceeds went to Strong Memorial Hospital for breast cancer research. And the best part is Brockport and Naz will make it an annual event!!

As for the game, well that was a fight too as the two teams tied 1-1 in double overtime. Jess VanAllen scored Brockport's goal, her third of the season.

Lastly, the men's soccer team lost their first game of the year 2-0 to nationally ranked #10 Hobart. Joe Marino still made 6 saves in the loss.

Now to our Elite Eagles!

Men - Matt Avery, Men's Cross Country - Avery led the men on Saturday at the Brockport invitational finishing second. He finished the 5-kilometer race in 15:54.

Women - Brittany Streeter, Women's Cross Country- Streeter finished second overall to help the women's team earn FIRST PLACE! She finished her race in 18:56.

Back to the nest again. Volleyball is the next team in action. They take on Cortland Tuesday night at 7:00 in Tuttle South. See ya there! and Go Golden Eagles.

P.S. - A quick Ellsworth shout out to Sue Hoffman, Assistant Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator at the College at Brockport, for winning the Longest Drive at the 89.1 the Point Open Golf Tournament Sunday. Way to Go!!!!!

Golden Eagles Wrap-up First Weekend

Hey everyone,

Well our first weekend of the 2009 Fall Season is in the books and the Brockport Golden Eagles overall had a very successful weekend.

First off, the Football team took down William Patterson in a thrilling 22-19 victory on Saturday. Kicker Emilio Genzano was good from 22 yards to give Brockport the lead with only 11 seconds left! What a way to start off the season! Leading the Golden Eagles' offense was Riedrick Alceus with 114 yards on the ground in his first game wearing the Green and Gold.

Elsewhere, the Women's Soccer team came back after dropping their season opener. Nicole Gibaud got the "hat-trick" scoring three goals in the 7-0 shutout win over D'Youville. Then the next day Brockport won a hard fought 1-0 game over St. John Fisher. Abby Smith netting the loan goal in the win.

The Men's Soccer team finished 1-0-1 on the weekend in the Doug May tournament. They beat Nazereth 2-0 on Saturday and then tied RIT 1-1 on Sunday. Steve Abgarian scored a pair of goals in the tourney.

A couple quick notes:

We are Underway!

Hey everyone, Ellsworth here again. Last night marked the official start to the 2009 Fall Season for Golden Eagles with Women's Soccer. Too bad they lost to University of Rochester 3-0, but hey lots of fans out there supporting so that's a great way to "kick" things off! Anyways, the loss last night marked the first time Brockport has lost the opener since 2005.

Also on Tuesday I got my hands on the SUNYAC Preseason Polls for Soccer. Brockport is ranked 3rd in the conference for the Women. The Men are ranked 5th. And in case your wondering who the teams to beat are this year- Oneonta Women are ranked 1st, while the Plattsburgh Men are 1st on their side.

Anyways, two more games on schedule for tonight. Men's Soccer and Women's Volleyball! The soccer team is home vs. Cazenovia (but don't head out to our field......the game is at Brockport High School so just take new campus drive and you can't miss it!). The volleyball team is at Roberts Wesleyan so that shouldn't stop you going out there and cheering them on too.

Back to the nest for now, I got to get some rest before the games start tonight. SEE YOU THERE!
