BASEBALL wins SUNYAC Championship

The College at Brockport Baseball Team has won the 2010 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship under third year head coach Justin Beach. The SUNYAC baseball postseason tournament was officially declared completed after Sunday’s elimination game between Oneonta and host Cortland was canceled due to snow and cold, windy weather.

Brockport, the lone team with a 2-0 record in the tournament, is the champion per SUNYAC bylaws and receives the league’s NCAA Div. III tournament automatic berth.

Brockport defeated Plattsburgh 14-9 in the first game and advanced in the winner’s bracket with a 10-6 win over Oneonta on Nathan Parrino’s (Brockport, NY/Brockport) walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday.

Parrino was named the tournament MVP after hitting .714 in the two games going 5-for-7 at the plate with seven runs batted in. Seniors Joe Zaccardo (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) and Jeff Jones (Lancaster, NY/Lancster) and junior Max Keado (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) joined Parrino on the all-tournament team. Zaccardo and Keado each hit .556 as Zaccardo had five hits with five RBI and Keado had five hits and five runs scored. Jones finished 4-for-8 with four RBI and two stolen bases.

League rules stipulate that the tournament must be concluded by the end of the day Monday (May 10). However, league and school officials agreed that no team should play three games in one day, which could have happened if Cortland and Oneonta played on Monday and that winner defeated Brockport. Therefore, the tournament was officially declared finished by SUNYAC Commissioner Dr. Patrick Damore.

Brockport’s league title is its first since 2004 and its fifth overall. NCAA tournament selections and pairings will be announced on Monday, May 17.
