The week that was.....

Hey fans,

I have returned from my computer-less, but paradise vacation on Eagle Island (check previous blogs for pictures!) only to come back to Brockport to see a frost this morning......what's up with that????

Anyways, another weekend has come and went for Golden Eagle sports. During the week there was only one game as our field hockey team lost to Utica 4-1. Taryn Rossi scored the only goal for Brockport.

Even though Brockport wasn't the site of the games on Saturday, the Golden Eagles were extremely busy.

Our women's soccer team kept it rolling with a 5-0 win over Cazenoiva College. We are second in the SUNYAC and the only team without a loss in the conference.

For football, Brockport fell to The College of New Jersey 48-34. A bright spot though was Aaron Zurn had three rushing TD's and a career high 145 yards for the Golden Eagles. Felipe Diaz tied a school record for 12 receptions. With the loss our record falls to 2-3 overall, 1-3 in the NJAC.

Now to the athletes of the week:

Matt Avery

Matt Avery (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) of men’s cross country team is this week’s male athlete of the week.

The junior took fifth place out of 164 runners at the Hamilton College Invitational on Saturday. Avery finished the sloppy 8K course with a time of 27:01.8. He was the first Brockport runner to cross the finish line and he led the Brockport team to a fourth place finish.

Katie Keller
Katie Keller

Senior Katie Keller (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) is this week’s female athlete of the week after leading The College at Brockport tennis team in its final regular season match and the SUNYAC Tournament.

Keller finished the season with a pair of victories in the regular-season finale against Roberts Wesleyan winning her singles match 6-3, 6-3 and teaming with fellow senior Erin McLaughlin for an 8-1 win in doubles.

Keller and McLaughlin also advanced to the semifinals of the SUNYAC Tournament held over the weekend in Syracuse. The tandem defeated the SUNY Plattsburgh doubles team by a score of 6-4, 7-5.

For the season, Keller had the most wins in singles play and recorded an 8-3 mark in doubles competition.

*******Special Notes*******

I am taking part in "Walk a Mile in her shoes" event on Wednesday at the Seymour College Union from 12-4. I will be wearing high heels along with several men on campus to raise awareness to stop violence against women. Come support the cause and stop by and say HI!!!

All week, the SAAC (Student Athletes Advisory Comittee) are collecting winter coats in our annual coat drive. We will be collecting coats at all the home contests this week and the athletic offices in Tuttle. They will be donated to the Brockport area clothing center.
