2010 Season Underway

Happy New Year Golden Eagle Fans!

I hope everyone had a nice holiday season and didn't get buried under all the snow. I was going to travel south but since they were experiencing cold weather as well I stuck around to keep tabs on our student-atheltes.

Here is a quick recap to catch everyone up to date on what our teams have been up to the past week.

The men's basketball team posted three SUNYAC wins against Geneseo, Oneonta and New Paltz and are now 7-2 on the season and in second place in the conference standings with a 4-1 record. Brockport will be competing in the Wendy's College Classic Tournament this week as the #5 seed and take on #4 seeded Roberts Wesleyan on Wednesday night at 8:15.

Women's basketball earned its second SUNYAC win of the season with a 52-48 victory over Geneseo last Tuesday night before losing to Oneonta and New Paltz over the weekend. The women will also be participating in the Wendy's College Classic and will face Nazareth on Tuesday at 6:15 at Roberst Wesleyan.

Wrestling traveled to the Virginia Duals over the weekend and took third place. Freshman Tyler Marlow was named the most outstanding wrestler of the American College Division. He won three matches including two by pin in 32 and 30 seconds.

Gymnastics opened its season with a victory over Cortland on Saturday as the Golden Eagles won all four events. Senior Christina Baggetta won the uneven bars event, junior Kaitlin Dewey won the vaulting competition, sophomore Colleen Chahbazi won the balance beam and freshman Elizabeth Levy won the floor exercise.

Men's Ice Hockey competed once over the break and lost 4-2 to Hobart. Justin Noble and Jason Gorrie each scored third-period power play goals to close a 3-0 lead but Brockport surrendered a late empty-net goal.

Senior Dan Brigano and junior Maria Quagliana each placed first in both the one meter and three meter diving events for The College at Brockport Swimming and Diving squads last week but RIT swept the first place finishes in each of the swimming events to post a pair of victories.

And now for your athletes of the week:
For the men:
Freshman Tyler Marlow (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) was named the most outstanding wrestler of the American College Division of the 30th annual Virginia Duals tournament. Marlow won three matches to lead The College at Brockport Wrestling team to a third place finish.

Brockport cruised to a 28-11 victory over Millersville University in the first round as Marlow pinned his opponent in the 125 weight class in 32 seconds. Brockport lost to Pitt-Johnston in the next round but rebounded to defeat Anderson College, 24-9, and Millersville University, 27-17, to claim the third place finish.

Against Anderson Marlow opened the match with a 5-4 decision and in the third place match against Millersville Marlow downed his opponent in 30 seconds.

For the women:
Freshman Elizabeth Levy helped guide the Golden Eagles to a 176.325-166 win over SUNY Cortland in the first gymnastics meet of the year. Brockport won all four events in the season opening victory as Levy won the floor exercise scoring a 9.450 in her collegiate debut.

That's all for now. Go Golden Eagles!
