Athletes of the Year

Seniors Steve Abgarian (Merrick, NY/Bellmore JFK) and Lauren Gildemeyer (Baldwinsville, NY/CW Baker) were voted The College at Brockport 2009-10 Outstanding Male and Female Athlete of the Year as voted on by the coaching and athletic administrative staff at the college.

Abgarian led the Golden Eagle Men’s Soccer team to the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament championship and the second round of the NCAA Tournament en route to earning the first All-American award for men’s soccer at Brockport since 1974. The senior forward led the team with 12 goals and four assists for 28 points and had four game-winning goals.
He was a First-Team All-SUNYAC selection, a First-Team All-Region selection and earned Third-Team All-America honors.

Gildemeyer capped a fantastic career leading the Golden Eagle Gymnastics team to a second consecutive second place finish at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) National Championships in 2010. The team also won its third Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) team championship in the past four years and set the school record for a team score with a 190.050 against SUNY Cortland during the regular season.
Individually, Gildemeyer received three All-America awards at the NCGA Championships as she placed second with 9.700 in the floor exercise, fifth all-around with 37.625 and tied for 10th the vault (9.050). Her performance qualified her for the NCAA Division I Regional Championships where she finished 14th on the floor exercise.
She won the floor exercise tying her career-high with a 9.9 and also captured first in the all-around competition leading Brockport to its third ECAC Championship title in the last four seasons and was named the ECAC Gymnast of the Year.
She scored a career high 38.600 in the all-around at Cornell, which ranks second best all-time at Brockport and her vault of 9.8 at the Brockport Invite tied the school record.
Gildemeyer is the third gymnast to represent The College at Brockport at the Division I Regional Championships and was an alternate for the regional championships in 2008. Former Golden Eagles Sarah Bulka and Carrie Santore competed at the regional during their careers.
